‘Songs of Toratah’ Fellowship
We invited an international group of stylistically diverse singer-songwriters to compose singable melodies for verses from Toratah. The fellowship, which included two Toratah lessons, culminated in a live concert at Central Synagogue on Feb 29, 2024. The album ZimraTah, Songs of Toratah is available on all major music streaming sites.

Named "the golden-voiced singer" by the NYTimes, Shira Averbuch, is a NYC based Israeli-American fairy-folk singer-songwriter and actress. She serves as the Artist-in-Residence at Bn'ai Jeshurun Synagogue in NYC. Born in upstate NY to Israeli parents, Shira split her time growing up between Israel and the States. After finishing her service as a singer in the IDF Band, Shira moved to NYC where she studied music, theatre and music therapy at The New School. Shira met music producer Paul Carbonara (Blondie) when she starred in his Off Broadway musical, Solitary Light, to much critical acclaim. Together they recorded two EPs, creating a live fairy-folk-acoustic sound so raw you could almost hear the wooden floors creaking under their feet Since her song Am I Beautiful, following her friend's battle with stage 3 breast cancer, went viral, Shira has been touring across the US, Europe and Israel playing heart stopping music bringing people together in joy and healing both the Jewish world and the world at large. “Shira presents an authentic narrative of longing for places we call home, as we head toward new frontiers — a metaphor we can all relate to right now.” -Americana Highways.

Elana Brody is a singer-songwriter, communal songleader, and Jewish prayer leader with roots in rural Appalachia, and a decade of Jewish life and leadership in New York City. Susan Rogers, engineer for Prince, called Elana "My favorite genius. Whatever she does will be ahead of its time." Rabbi Jill Hammer, founder of the Kohenet Institute, called Elana's work "Magnificent, Stunning, Holy." Elana attended Berklee College of Music, is a graduate of the Kohenet Institute, and will begin ALEPH's Davennen Leadership Training Institute this summer. Elana Brody founded the “Sing a New Song” New Years song retreat, a retreat for calling in new prayers, and also produced a Iyar Healing Music series, which featured over 60 Jewish songwriters in well-attended online concerts during the pandemic. She currently lives as “artist in residence” at Farfields Farm in Virginia, facilitates prayer and communal song circles, and is completing two EPs of original folk music to be released this year. Koach Baruch (KB) Frazier, Au.D. is a transformer, heartbeat of movements, healer, musician, founder of the Black Trans Torah Club and co-founder of the Tzedek Lab, a network of practitioners working at the intersection of dismantling racism, antisemitism and white supremacy. A collaborative leader, rooted in tradition, curiosity and love, Koach strives to dismantle racism, actualize liberation and transform lives both sonically and spiritually. Koach lives and gardens with their wife, LaJuana and daughter, Aasha in Philadelphia on unceded Lenni-Lenape Land where he is a student at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College.
Yuli Yael Be’eri’s professional career as a performer began at the age of nine, Performing for Shimon Peres, the President of Israel, at The School Of Arts. She went on to star in Israeli film, television, and advertising campaigns, before moving to New York City to pursue a career as a musician. In her years in New York, she has fronted major rock acts, played bass at international music festivals, founded an independent non-for-profits arts and production organization, all while pursuing an aggressive agenda as composer, arranger, music producer and new media creator. Yuli continues to expand her creative horizons, with multitude of projects.
Yosef Goldman is a composer, prayer leader, educator, singer, and rabbi who utilizes song, prayer and the Torah of the heart to facilitate healing and build sacred community. Yosef’s original music is deeply rooted in both his Ashkenazi and Mizrahi heritage and his songs are sung in communities around the country and Israel. His second album of original music, Abitah, will be released this summer on Rising Song Records. Yosef serves as Senior Advisor to Hadar’s Rising Song Institute. He co-leads Piyyut Rising, an ensemble that centers the musical-spiritual heritage of Jews from the Middle East and North Africa. He lives in Gaithersburg, MD, and serves as co-rabbi of Shaare Torah synagogue, alongside his spouse, Rabbi Annie Lewis.
Naomi Less is a Brooklyn-based, internationally celebrated singer/songwriter, ritualist and educator. Beloved for her warm smile and inviting presence, communities celebrate her imagination and innovation, tenderness and pizzazz! Her original music is sung in worship communities worldwide. She has been featured on musical recordings and commissions by PJ Library, Transcontinental Ruach publications, Rick Recht and Jewish World Productions, Funky Monkeys, the Cantors Assembly, Foundation for Jewish Camp, Sacred Rights Sacred Songs, URJ Crane Lake Camp and others across the Jewish community. Naomi serves as Co-Founder, Ritual Leader and Associate Director of Lab/Shul and Core Educator at Songleader Boot Camp. She is an alum of the Rising Song Institute Fellowship, host of the show "Jewish Women Rock" on Jewish Rock Radio (amplifying the voices of women and non-binary folks) and performance artist and speaker for Uprooted: A Jewish Response to Fertility Challenges, providing healing for people struggling with fertility journeys.
Rabbi Annie Lewis (she/her) is an organizer, poet, parent, story-weaver, singer, and teacher of Torah of the heart. She serves as co-rabbi of Shaare Torah in Gaithersburg, Maryland with her partner, Rabbi Yosef Goldman. She moved south from Philadelphia, where she spent a decade leading congregations, training rabbis, studying couples and family therapy, marching for justice, and walking in the city.
Chava Mirel is a unique being in the world of music and spirit, defying classifications of style or genre. A multi-award winning musician and composer whose voice was recently featured on a Grammy award winning album, Chava is highly sought-after for collaborations and recordings. Celebrated for her rich, luxurious vocals, lush harmonies, and rhythmic phrasing, Chava is also known for her loving and compassionate presence. Regardless of setting - spiritual gathering, concert hall, classroom or jazz club - she imbues her music and teachings with the universal themes of hope, caring, connection and inclusion. Chava’s latest original album, “Source of Love”, is a collection of songs set to prayers from the Jewish Liturgy as well as new songs with universal themes that encourage the listener to create a better future by focusing on nature, family, and spirituality.
Alicia Jo Rabins is a writer, musician, performer and Torah teacher. The New York Times calls her voice “gorgeous”; the San Francisco Chronicle calls her writing “a poetry page-turner, both sexy and humble.” Alicia is the creator and performer of Girls in Trouble (TW, IG, FB), an indie-folk song cycle about women in Torah with accompanying curriculum, and the independent feature film, A Kaddish for Bernie Madoff. Rabins is the author of two award-winning poetry collections, Divinity School and Fruit Geode, and Even God Had Bad Parenting Days, a book of short personal essays about early parenthood and Jewish spirituality.
Miriam Rubin has served as the director of the Jewish sacred music team at Temple of the Stranger, and convener of sacred music at Web of Life Community NYC. Miriam is an Ordained Interfaith Minister who officiates life cycle events, rites of passage, name change ceremonies, and offers somatic support through life's transitions. In 2022 and 2023, she served as the Director of Rites of Passage for Youth at Wayfinders on the Hudson for 12-13 year olds. Miriam offers Somatic Healing, Soul-Guiding mentorships, song-circles, and drum making workshops. Miriam is a 4th generation New Yorker living on Lenapehoking Territory. Beth Schafer continues to redefine Jewish music by combining masterful songwriting with sensitivity to liturgy and unique insight toward text. She specializes in music for Torah-minded adults looking for an extension to their Jewish lives through music. What makes her music special is her attention to the universal themes that not only define Judaism, but many other faiths as well. Beth Schafer won the 2006 American Idol Underground Faith Based competition and has used that win to create new music for interfaith communities. Schafer has degrees in Music Theory and Composition from the University of Miami School of Music and is a trained and much sought after guitarist in styles ranging from Classical to Blues, Folk to Jazz.
Jewish music innovator, Basya Schechter is a singer songwriter multi-instumentalist, composer, producer, musical director and cantor. She is the lead singer and founder of the pan-Mediterranean Psychedelic band Pharaoh’s Daughter. With them, she has released 5 albums on Knitting Factory, Tzadik and Magenta labels, as well as two solo albums, an oud, Persian Santur percussion project called “Queen’s Dominion," and cycle of songs set to the Yiddish poet and philosopher Abraham Joshua Heschel, called “Songs of Wonder.” As a single mother most of her recent projects have been collaborations, in the spirit of "It Takes a Village," Which include "Raya" with Darshan's Eprhyme and "Songs to Live By" with Daniel Ori. She is thrilled to be a part of this new Toratah project. For the last decade she has served as Hazzan in the renewal community, and leads at Romemu Brooklyn.
Julie Silver is one of the most celebrated and beloved performers in the world of contemporary Jewish music today. She has recorded a dozen albums and has been touring throughout the world, engaging audiences with her thought provoking compositions, her lyrical guitar playing, her dynamic stage presence, and her megawatt smile for over40 years. She resides in Southern California with her wife and two daughters.
Kohenet Dr. Harriette E. Wimms is a Maryland licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in providing compassion-infused mental health care to children, adolescents, adults, and families across the age span. K'Harriette is a prayer leader in both the Kohenet community and at Hinenu: The Baltimore Justice Shtiebl. She is the driving force behind Hinenu JOC and the Baltimore JOC Community Havurah. Dr. Wimms is also the inaugural Jews of Engagement Fellow at The Associated, Baltimore Jewish Federation (the first type of position within any Jewish Federation System). A current Schusterman Fellow, Dr. Wimms is a Selah cohort 17 fellow, a contract trainer for Keshet, and is the founder and executive director of the Jews of Color Mishpacha Project as well as the organization's signature JOCSM Shabbatonim (JOCMishpacha.org).
